My new mate has arrived, Wally the Australian Shepherd. It's rather strange the history of the breed shows they were actually developed in the USA as a ranch dog. My thinking on the breed for a small farm is that they are just a little more passive than the Australian Kelpie which I had before, a bit more homely and not so much a wanderer - we will see. Right now Wally is just a pouncer on chickens type of dog and completely scared of the horses, cattle and alpacas but mind you at 10 weeks old he is just a little fella. Let the training begin I say - Wally, Wally, Wally where the bloody hell are you.
Flowers

For me, the animals on my farm are company, all with their own personalities and moods. The vegetables, fruit, nuts, berries and bush tucker are sustenance and survival and are a source of great pride tp produce. Interspersed as you walk the farm, are flowers. The linking elements between paddocks, orchards and vegetables keeping the conversation flowing and creating another treat at every turn. I wonder why I grew them and continue to plant more. Are they just my little luxury to look at and photograph? Could it be the flowers are to stroke my ego as people enquire about their beauty and I tell a story of where it came from and how hard was to grow? No, I think not.
