Soil Tests - why didn't I think of that?
Now I consider myself a relatively intelligent man
but my one consistent failing on the farm has been to charge in like a ‘bull at
a gate’ and not have a process for anything. A good example has been planting
trees where I’d plant one, it would die so I’d plant another somewhere else
figuring the first spot was wrong. My tamarillo tree was fantastic for the
first 11months, great fruit crop and then the wet seasons hit and the soil had too
much clay meaning the water couldn’t drain away and it quickly died within
weeks of some root rot. With the
fresh eyes of my friend Jane who one seeing the farm for the first time and after hearing of
the tamarillo issue asked why I hadn't simply made a soil map of
the place – deeerrrr why didn’t I think of that. How So I’m Ph testing all the various areas and
digging holes and filling them up with water to test draining times.
