Unlikley Freinds - Animals are not racist

When I fist got alpacas to my farm I was told their arch enemy was a dog. I was also told Alpacas are being run with sheep on farms to protect the sheep from wild dog attacks and once alpacas 'knew' their herd/flock they were very protective even jumping on snakes to protect.  That is probably true but it's the "knowing" their herd that is the interesting subject here.

Horses and dogs are also not the best of friends, in fact horses have been blessed with back legs that are a fantastic deterrent to dogs. Then animals just seem to know when other animals are not a danger and they also seem to know when they themselves need a friend then a friend can be anything.

I have a duck that worked out its best friends of a night time are the 3 geese that sleep by the dam and the little duck works her way into the middle of them where she is protected. I have a black angus steer and an alpaca that play chases around the paddock and spar off late afternoon. My rooster thinks he is human and my dog Wally is protecter of all small animals including new hatched chickens.

It seems to me that animals have it right and can teach humans some good habits. Animals don't care the colour, the shape, the noises each other make or even the number of legs then just want company and get along living their best lives.
