Chainsaw Ninja

Well as the drought continues on one must maintain their spirits. Drought is relative to the area you live in, if the annual rainfall is 2000 mm and you get 500mm then that is just as relevant and somewhere they normally get 400 mm and only get's 50mm. Well in my logic anyway.

My land has cracked open, all the fence posts are loose as the soil contracts, the grass that normally grows here is just not sprouting at all and my animals have been eating hay now for over 8 months.

But chin up, what goes around comes around.

I'm a dam half full kinda guy and I've had a good look now at what I must do to future proof the farm. Simple - Trap more water and then get it to the places on the farm they dry out. I've raised the spillway on the dam and dug a corner deeper which should keep in excess of another 100,000 litres which is enough to irrigate the grass through spring in the primary growing season here. If I can 'wake' the grass up after winter I can carry it through a long hot summer. I'm ready for the 'new normal' as they say because I'm out doing something where too many are just sitting around blaming everyone else rather than doing something themselves.

2016 was the hottest year for the world and 2019 was the second hottest year but that doesn't mean less rainfall - neccessarily. For my farm 2019 was only the 9th driest year since 1923 when records started and the driest 3 years were all before the 1960's.

The rain will come again, the dam will fill, I'll probably dance naked in the paddock again and life will go on. The powers of positive thinking.
