Priming the pump
The lesson I had to lean. When I fist brought the farm is was just an abandoned block of land. The power had been turned off after the previous owner's house burnt down. The water pump hadn't worked for all those years but had been advertised in the sales contract that there was one running an irrigation system. After the property settled I was fixing water troughs and noticed there was no water pumping. I rang the Real Estate Agent and asked him about it, he said "oh you just need to give it a prime, it will go". Not wanting to sound an idiot and a 'green horn' I thanked him and thought I'd find out how on the Internet - big mistake. I had to bury my pride and ask a neighbour. A valuable lesson was learned - when buying a farm learn to ask for advice first.
Now, for those like me here is how you actually do it.
