A Bumper Crop of Turmeric

Like most things I have success with it usually comes by chance rather than good planning. Turmeric and ginger are two foods I eat regularly in Asian style dishes and apparently they are both good for you. Well at my first attempt I turned out 1kg of turmeric - easy.  From looking at the plant it seems to grow through spring and summer and die down at the end of autumn so that the picking time. i just took half what was there. I grew the plant from a piece of numeric I purchased in the supermarket and i just put it in the garden an up it came.  The soil was not the natural soil from my farm and was a potting mix I had purchased by the true load to use through out the garden to try to break the clay down. I had some tin garden beds I had been given and wanting to constrict the plants from spreading I just filled them up to about 20cm with the mix and that was it.  I would say it was well drained soil, quite friable and had little compost so watering regularly was a must. I've seen how the landscape yard mix the potting mix/garden soil and it has a lot of crusher dust in it so Id say key to growing turmeric is a soil with some lime and well drained.
